Editorial Dear Readers, Welcome to our newsletter update. I’d like to use this opportunity to share + the latest company success story with you – the story about Finland’s decisive step into the smart world. Hovercrafts, trucks and sometimes good old fashioned hiking – the means of the transportation differed, but the destination was always the same: Finland’s energy future. In 2014, Finland reports a nearly 100 percent smart metering coverage, reinforcing its position as one of the most advanced countries in Europe, not only in terms of its ability to meter electricity consumption at the residential level. The Nordic country has been long established as a frontrunner during Europe’s transition to smart energy management. Our committed Finnish team gained a truly broad range of experiences during an effective nationwide rollout of smart metering technology, being the preferred partner for delivering comprehensive end-to-end solutions to major utilities. Up to now, Landis+Gyr has delivered over one million smart meters to Finland – the equivalent of delivering a smart meter to every third Finnish household. The transition has been rapid and the rollout’s volume and speed was breathtaking at times: at the critical stage, a smart meter was installed every minute. I’m proud that we at Landis+Gyr have been able to help Finland to exceed EU and national milestones; it has become the frst country in the world to introduce hourly data measurement on an unprecedented scale. We successfully realized several major turn-key projects, including the provision of meter reading services and comprehensive integrations to utilities’ IT systems. The investment has already started to pay off for both end-consumers and energy providers. Initial feedback shows that Finnish end consumers welcome the advent of the smart world and embrace the new technology. Demand for personal energy management tools is on the rise, and most utilities offer their customers web-based tools and portals. With the support of Landis+Gyr, utilities have been instensively informing their customers of the latest smart metering technologies and advancements with tools such as the Smart Metering Guide to explain them the benefts of smart metering to end-consumers and society as a whole. According to Finnish legislation on billing and smart metering introduced in 2009, 80 percent of Finnish households were to have smart meters installed by the beginning of 2014. The total volume of smart metering coverage has clearly exceeded that national target and is now close to 100 percent. Now that cornerstone is in place, the smart grid is the logical next step. We have gained lots of valuable experience in Finland which allows us to be the preferred partners of European utilities in their smart metering roll outs. Together with our customers and our parent company Toshiba, we at Landis+Gyr are ready to take the next steps necessary to make smart grids and smart communities a reality, in Finland and throughout the EMEA region.
