Atlanta, GA – June 3, 2026
Landis+Gyr (SIX: LAND), a global leader in energy technology driving intelligent innovation across the grid, today announced that the New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) has approved the Surent™ G480 ultrasonic gas meter for use in gas metering applications. The approval followed a series of tests conducted at National Grid’s standards laboratory that validated the meter’s measurement accuracy and safety performance. The certification makes the G480 the first ultrasonic gas meter approved for use in New York State.
“The Surent™ G480 provides New York utilities with capabilities that simply were not possible with traditional gas meters, including real-time pressure monitoring, remote shutoff, and interval data for volume, pressure, and temperature,” said Amith Kota, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Landis+Gyr. “This means utilities can respond to potential safety issues more quickly and with far less disruption to the customers they serve. Ultrasonic metering technology is about giving operators the tools to better serve customers—whether that’s responding more rapidly to a safety event or ensuring accurate billing.”
The NYPSC order approving the G480 outlines testing procedures that included accuracy testing under accelerated aging and extreme temperature conditions, as well as hydrostatic leak detection testing. The order also notes that the meter’s integrated shutoff valve exceeds the gas-tightness requirements of the ASME B16.33 standard. The approval allows National Grid, along with other gas utilities across New York State, to begin deploying the G480 in the field.
Enhancing System Operations, Safety, and Accuracy
Landis+Gyr’s Surent™ portfolio of smart gas metering solutions is designed to prioritize safety and long-term accuracy. Backed by more than 30 years of ultrasonic expertise, these next-generation gas metering solutions combine advanced sensing technology with communications flexibility and are supported by an efficient 20-year battery life.
The Surent™ G480 is an all-in-one ultrasonic meter that utilizes solid-state ultrasonic measurement technology with three-channel interval logging for volume, pressure, and temperature. The meter also provides integrated communications through Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream® Connect IoT network, supporting cellular, Wi-SUN®, RF Mesh, and Mesh IP communication protocols.
Its integrated shutoff valve enables rapid remote response to potentially unsafe conditions detected by its advanced sensor technology. Utilities across the Midwest and surrounding regions have already begun deploying the G480, helping drive the transition to this next-generation gas metering technology.
