Landis+Gyr’s Dynamic Voltage Management Solution Chosen by Oregon Utility for Energy Efficiency Program

ATLANTA, GA. – March 4, 2014 Central Lincoln People's Utility District recently selected Landis+Gyr's Dynamic Voltage Management solution to improve energy efficiency across the distribution system.

The system uses Central Lincoln's existing Gridstream® advanced metering and smart grid network technology to monitor and determine voltage levels throughout the controlled circuit. EDGE® software from Dominion Voltage Inc. integrates with both the Gridstream platform and the utility's SCADA system to make real-time decisions on optimum voltage levels and to remotely control regulators.

While many utilities are now using voltage management as a demand response tool to reduce peak load, Central Lincoln will run the program around the clock to promote overall energy efficiency.

"Dynamic voltage management has many benefits, but our primary goal for the program is energy savings to the customer without requiring a change in behavior. All socioeconomic groups benefit as the savings occur without regard to homeowner or renter status," said Bruce Lovelin, Chief Engineer and Manager of Systems Engineering for Central Lincoln. "What makes this system unique is the intelligent use of real-time voltage data from multiple locations along the feeder to make adjustments and it allows us to get added value from our existing advanced metering system.."

Landis+Gyr's Dynamic Voltage Management solution uses each advanced meter as a voltage monitor. Historical meter data helps select the best circuits for reduction within the ANSI-approved voltage range, while real-time data integrates with the SCADA system to drive automated adjustments. The software then validates the adjustments and continues monitoring voltage levels to maintain the appropriate range.

"Dynamic voltage management requires ready access to meter voltage data, systems and software integration, and validation to ensure success," said Kent Hedrick, Director of Grid Automation Solutions at Landis+Gyr. "Our solution brings all three requirements together in a package that delivers ongoing value for our customers."
