Landis+Gyr Commends New York State Public Service Commission’s Energy Data Initiative

Access to energy data, while at the same time protecting consumer choice and data privacy, is imperative for transformational energy policies

ATLANTA, GA. – March 30, 2020 – Landis+Gyr (LAND.SW), a global leader in smart energy management, announced its support for the recently initiated proceeding of the New York State Public Service Commission to assess the comprehensive use and access to energy-related data that balances privacy, security and the creation of a cleaner, affordable and more resilient energy system.
“By addressing the importance of access to data and consumer choice, this proceeding has the potential to set a new standard for how commissions balance data privacy and the ability for all parties to benefit from the data made available from a digitized grid,” said Prasanna Venkatesan, Landis+Gyr’s Executive Vice President of the Americas region. “Distributed energy resources, electrification of transportation and other changes to our energy infrastructure require data for situational awareness, business transactions and maintaining power quality. At the same time, consumers who choose to participate in energy management programs can greatly benefit from the automation and energy savings these tools provide.

“Establishing guidelines for the sharing and use of energy data will further expand the options available to consumers in the future,” Venkatesan added.

As utilities and consumers transition to cleaner sources of power generation, new smart grid technologies provide sensing and measurement tools that are critical for maintaining a reliable, efficient and cost-effective energy delivery system. Smart grid technologies now offer applications, similar to popular smart phone apps, that allow consumers to opt-in for capabilities such as appliance monitoring, setting usage thresholds and security alerts. Features that enable utilities to monitor the operation and health of system equipment are also being deployed.
