Landis+Gyr leads Smart Multi-Energy Development
Energie Thun starts installation of Landis+Gyr smart meters capable of reading electricity, as well as gas and water by third parties – all from the same device
Zug, Switzerland, 5th November 2015 – Landis+Gyr, leading global supplier of energy management solutions, has won a contract to support the Swiss energy supplier Energie Thun AG with the rollout of Gridstream®, Landis+Gyr’s end-to-end smart metering solution including smart meters, communication options, software and services.
Under the terms of the contract, Landis+Gyr is supplying Energie Thun with smart electricity meters – that also allow a separate, third party supplier to take gas and water meter readings over the same device – a load management system and receivers, as well as AIM software. The first smart meters were installed in September this year in the area of Breitenweg, which is located in the region of Thun in central Switzerland.
“This rollout is an important milestone for the future of the Swiss energy supply system,” says Michael Staudinger, Country Manager of Landis+Gyr Switzerland. “Smart meters are an essential ingredient for the development of a smart grid and they provide an important contribution to executing the Swiss government’s Energy Strategy 2050. We therefore applaud the decision by Energie Thun AG to install a smart metering solution at this early stage and we are looking forward to the close cooperation.”
“Energy Thun is making a further step in the direction of an intelligent energy future,” says Christoph Woodtli at Energy Thun, “The decision to invest in smart metering supports the Swisspower Masterplan 2050. This plan advocates a social and economically viable upgrade of our existing energy system, while striving to achieve sustainability for future generations; ultimately, it supports the energy strategy of the Swiss government. The introduction of a smart metering system is one of many steps that will contribute to the upgrade of the energy system and in reaching these set goals.”
In 2012, Energy Thun conducted a pilot project with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, designed to research new energy services based on smart metering systems. The results of the pilot project contributed to the development of the residential smart meters that are now being rolled out. Moreover, the technology being deployed in Thun meets the recommended technical and installation requirements set out by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.
