Landis+Gyr contributes to the European energy debate
The risk of energy shortages is motivating politicians to look for solutions to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This explains the huge interest from members of the European Parliament and associated committees in participating in the conference “Smart Metering; an intelligent Solution to Help Reduce Energy Consumption” organized by the Utilities Telecom Council in Brussels. As a leading provider of smart metering technology, and based on the experience of numerous successful advanced metering infrastructure installations on several continents, Landis+Gyr was invited to demonstrate the potential of its solutions as enabling technology in the energy efficiency and environmental debate.
In his speech Stefan Weber, Executive Vice President Landis+Gyr Europe, highlighted the fact that smart metering is a reality today, and Landis+Gyr has – and will – install many smart metering projects and millions of smart meters across Europe. During the event it was demonstrated how smart metering can be implemented, and what it can do for utilities and consumers alike, as well as how the functionality can be expanded using in-home displays and the subsequent affect on energy efficiency.
The event was opened by Spanish Members of the European Parliament Salvador Garriga and Aljeo Vidal-Quadras, Vice President of the European Parliament and a member of the Committee on Industry, Trade and Energy. In their speeches both emphasized the necessity of smart metering if the EU is to achieve its energy efficiency and climate protection goals. EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva stressed the importance of smart metering for consumer protection. She said, “There is so much potential for real savings here, both to individual consumers and to our national economies.”
