Landis+Gyr Partners with Amazonas Energia to Bring Advanced Metering Infrastructure to the Amazon Region

Partnership will utilize Landis+Gyr’s industry leading Gridstream® Connect IoT network communications technology to create a more flexible and efficient grid responsive to community needs

Curitiba, Brazil – Feb. 22, 2021 – Landis+Gyr and Brazilian energy distribution company Amazonas Energia have partnered to bring advanced metering technologies to the state of Amazonas for the first time. By ensuring greater efficiency and safety in combating non-technical losses, the implementation of intelligent metering and aggregated services will accelerate the modernization of Amazonas Energia’s energy distribution network and improve service for its customers.

In addition to the economic benefits of smart metering for distributors, advanced metering technology contributes to local communities and protects the environment by increasing efficiency across the grid and reducing carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions, especially in regions that rely on fossil fuels for power generation. With better management of the distribution system as a whole, Landis+Gyr’s technology will also help Amazonas Energia avoid power outages.

“We are very proud to be part of the modernization that Amazonas Energia is promoting in its business and in the state's energy distribution networks, which reflects the company’s transparency and respect for customers,” said Oscar Villalobos, Vice President and Country Manager at Landis+Gyr in South America. “As specialists in centralized metering and in combating non-technical losses, we are committed to providing reliable, scalable and interoperable solutions, as well as high-quality technical services that will enable Amazonas Energia to achieve its revenue recovery and customer service goals.”

As a pioneer in this technology with 2.5 million centralized metering points in operation in Brazil and other Latin American countries, Landis+Gyr will offer the SGP+M Mesh IP intelligent centralized metering solution to 100,000 customers of Amazonas Energia. The new program will rely on Landis+Gyr’s cutting edge Gridstream® Connect RF Mesh IP, as well as the Command Center system for the acquisition of metering data and aggregated services necessary for full operation and integration.

William Fernandes, Head of Product Management for South America at Landis+Gyr, commented, “The Gridstream Connect platform is the most advanced, secure and scalable product on the market for smart metering networks. In addition to presenting advanced cybersecurity and interoperability requirements, the platform is already in operation in high data flow applications for tens of millions of utility sensors in Brazil and abroad. Amazonas Energia will have access to the most robust centralized metering solution for fraud detection, combined with future IoT demands.”

The partnership with Amazonas Energia strengthens Landis+Gyr’s position as a leading global supplier of intelligent metering technology and the largest provider of centralized metering systems in Latin America.
