Bits to Energy, Landis+Gyr, Switzerland, January 2011 – Landis+Gyr, the world‟s leading provider of energy management solutions, has contributed to an innovative energy research project with the Bits to Energy Lab - a joint research initiative of Switzerland‟s leading universities ETH Zurich and University of St. Gallen. Bits to Energy combines core competencies from multiple disciplines, such as electrical engineering, computer science, marketing and psychology, to change behavior and foster residential energy efficiency.
Zug, Switzerland, 26 November, 2010 - Landis+Gyr, leading provider of smart metering solutions, will enable the migration of the entire customer base of Finnish public utility Kuopio Energy to smart metering by the end of 2013. The deal, which is a turnkey delivery, was signed today in Kuopio, Finland, for the delivery of 50,000 smart electricity meters, the smart metering software Gridstream AIM, as well as installation and project management – all by Landis+Gyr.

The European Parliament has reached agreement on the EU Energy Package, stating that all households across the EU must be equipped with smart meters by 2022. In addition, the Parliament has heard a first reading of the Energy Efficiency of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and voted to further speed up smart meter deployment by requiring that all new buildings and those undergoing renovation be equipped with smart meters.
The decisions mean that smart metering will play a leading role in enabling the EU to meet its ambitious environmental and energy efficiency goals. The EU Energy Package states that 80 percent of households across the EU are to be fitted with smart meters by 2020, while the EPBD states that the Directive is transposed into national law as early as 2012.
