Landis+Gyr partners with TEXX for a greener mobile future

Jon Stretch, Executive Vice President at Landis+Gyr EMEA said, “Landis+Gyr is proud to work with one of the most innovative players in the area of charg-ing stations and battery management systems. Through this partnership, we can better examine what is going on at the forefront of the electric vehicles and charging industry. With joint development and pilot projects we want to be engaged in the development of this upcoming industry. We believe that elec-tric vehicles can be a means of helping people to manage energy better. Lan-dis+Gyr with its excellent position in smart metering, and TEXX, with its inno-vative battery management and charging station technology, have the poten-tial to form synergies for successful cooperation.”

“TEXX is enabling a new dimension of electric mobility,” said Remo Estermann Jr, Chairman of TEXX, ”Cooperation with Landis+Gyr opens up exciting new opportunities for us in the development of smart grid integrated vehicles and charging infrastructure systems. Local storage systems are a key element of future energy management. This partnership allows us to seamlessly integrate our station2grid and vehicle2grid into existing and future infrastructures. Landis+Gyr’s long and international experience will help us to quickly adapt our systems to various markets with different regulations.”

As the world responds to concerns over warming and climate change, the advantages of electric vehicles are numerous. The take-up of electric vehicles is expected to have a massive positive effect on the environment in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. Other advantages are the multiplicity of energy sources, reduced noise and the possibility of lower operating costs. In other words plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars can offer a sustainable transportation system for Europe’s future.

The European Commission (EC) recently released its roadmap for a low carbon economy. The Commission recognises that consumers need to have the opportunity to contribute towards increased energy efficiency. In 2010, European Commissioner Antonio Tajani gave European standardisation organisations a mandate to develop a common charging system for electric vehicles. Three bodies, the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC) and the European telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), are to put together a new standard that ensures that all types of electric cars, scooters and bicycles can be safely charged across all 27 EU member states.

The smart grid is seen as a key enabler of a low-carbon electricity system and will allow significant gains to be made through demand-side management and increased shares of renewables. The thread that ties all of these elements together is the energy infrastructure: the smart grid.
