Strong partnership for a total solution

Improved operational efficiency, significant cost savings and enhanced customer services were the key benefits for Energi Fyn, one of the leading utilities in Denmark, after implementing a total smart metering solution for all of their 81,000 customers. The state-of-the-art multienergy solution from Landis+Gyr includes electricity, heat and water.

The integrated project has involved fi eld operations staff from the Denmark office as well as software specialists based in Finland, and also needed to be a multi-energy solution. Once fi nished, the program will cover all of Energi Fyn’s metering points and is part of a continuing process and partnership with Landis+Gyr. The comprehensive solution includes deployment of meters and communication devices as well as an AMM system. Implementation of this contract is expected to be completed by 2010. Energi Fyn will then have all of its 81,000 customers covered by automatic metering. The upgrade helps realize savings through streamlining metering processes, improving customer service, and optimizing energy management. Landis+Gyr’s solution specialists took the time to understand exactly what the customer wanted and customized the AMM system accordingly.

Stepwise system extension
The first phase of the project started in 2006, when Energi Fyn commissioned a smart metering upgrade of 25,000 of its electricity meters to be read automatically, thereby ending “yearly reads”. This phase was completed in 2007. In the second phase, which started in October 2007, the utility expanded this system by connecting an additional 50,000 metering points, demonstrating the customer’s long-term satisfaction with Landis+Gyr. These new meters were connected to Energi Fyn’s Advanced Metering Management (AMM) solution, also purchased previously from Landis+Gyr. Integrated into this, requiring customization from software personnel, was the additional function of being able to connect its AMM system to heat and water meters, thereby expanding its multi-energy metering portfolio.

Powerline and GPRS communication
During the second phase, communications were augmented with the use of fi ber-optic cables, guaranteeing best possible coverage in the most costefficient way. Previously Energi Fyn mainly used its own power lines for communication, using GPRS only for meters in remote areas. The utility chose Landis+Gyr because its AMM solution has a multi-energy capability and a broad range of technology. The customer is extremely satisfi ed with product development and the overall project.

Energi Fyn is a distribution and network service company responsible for owning, constructing and maintaining electricity network and supply services. Energi Fyn covers 81,000 metering points on Fyn, the central island of Denmark. The utility also manages construction of its customers’ broadband infrastructure.
